Residential Collection Driver, Kerhonkson, NY (Part-Time)

Community Compost Company collects food scraps for composting in Hoboken, Jersey City, Newark, and the Hudson Valley of NY. We are a leader in the region for composting and are pioneering these programs in communities to keep food scraps out of the waste stream. The food scraps we collect are taken to local farms and converted into compost, which is then returned to the earth to replenish soil quality and support healthier plants. The finished compost is sold through our brand, Hudson Soil Company.

We are seeking a reliable, flexible, and environmentally minded person to serve as a backup driver for our compost collector position. As our Compost Collector, you’re in charge of picking up 5-gallon buckets and 48-gallon toters from our customers and simultaneously delivering clean bins to them. The position is approximately 10-14 hours a week, Thursdays and Fridays, but could increase in hours based on the expansion of the route or need for coverage. 

About the Job

Starting Salary: $19-21/hr

Time Requirement: Thursday & Friday (10-14hr/week)

Collection:

  • Drive a pick-up truck to perform residential door-to-door food scrap collection in the Hudson Valley

  • Wash compost bins, clean, organize, and ensure equipment is labeled and in good condition

  • Access and use our database through a provided mobile device to enter weights and other information during collection

  • Remove contamination of food waste dropped

  • Routinely check and maintain compost vehicles (gas, oil, water, fluids, tire pressure)

  • Maintain clean collection vehicles and remove trash and personal items from collection vehicles after each route

Requirements:

  • Valid Driver's License

  • Clean driving record (we will perform a background check)

  • Comfort driving trucks safely in rural and urban environments

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, maneuver wheeled bins of compost weighing up to 250 lbs., and be outside in all weather conditions (we operate year-round)

  • Comfort with some technology - Tablets, Excel, Google Docs

  • Be on time and show up when expected

  • Good problem solver with personal initiative

  • Passion for being part of a team; experience on teams

Preferences:

  • Interest in environmental stewardship and composting, or the desire to learn more about these topics

  • Experience on a delivery route is a plus

  • Basic mechanical skills and knowledge of vehicle maintenance

We are seeking a reliable, flexible, and environmentally minded person to serve as a backup driver for our compost collector position. The position is approximately 12-20 hours per week, with the potential for more hours and growth with the company.

Time Requirement: TBD (12-20hr/week)

Collection:

  • Residential and commercial door-to-door collection by flatbed truck with a lift-gate

  • Use our database to access the route and enter information during collection 

  • Field service requests from our customer support staff throughout your work day

  • Wash compost bins, organize and maintain inventory at our storage space in Hoboken

  • Table and community outreach at farmers markets, green fairs, and/or community events when  available and appropriate

Requirements

  • Interest in environmental stewardship and composting

  • Flexibility of schedule to fill in when needed

  • Ability to lift 40 pounds and roll equipment on wheels weighing up to 250 pounds

  • Desire to work outdoors in any weather situation

  • Valid Driver's License, at least 2 years of driving experience, and a clean driving record (we will do a background check)

  • Comfort driving a non-CDL truck, transit van, or similar vehicle, or willingness to learn

  • Professional driving experience for a delivery service or similar is strongly preferred

  • Comfort with basic technology - Tablets, Excel, Google Docs

  • Lives within close proximity to Hoboken and Jersey City

  • Be on time and show up when expected

  • Good problem solver with personal initiative

  • Passion for being part of a team

  • Ability to effectively communicate with customers when needed

Commercial Collection Driver, Kerhonkson, NY

Time Requirement: Wednesday, Thursday & Friday (21-28hr/week)

  • Drive a truck to perform commercial door-to-door food scrap collection 

  • Haul material from NJ, Hoboken DPW to Kerhonkson compost site 

  • Wash compost bins, clean, organize, and ensure equipment is labeled

  • Access and use our database through a mobile device to enter weights and other information during collection and at the farm

  • Removing contamination of food waste dropped

  • Routinely check and maintain compost vehicles (fuel, oil, water, fluids, tire pressure)

  • Maintain clean collection vehicles: washing inside after emptying the truck, and removing trash and personal items from collection vehicles after each route

  • Weekly inventory and assessment of collection equipment, and requesting items that need to be replenished

  • Maintain the organization of collection materials in the barn

Requirements

  • Interest in environmental stewardship and composting, or the desire to learn more about these topics

  • Valid Driver's license

  • Minimum 6 months driving experience of a non-CDL box truck, dump truck, garbage truck, or other large vehicles

  • Comfortably drive trucks safely in rural and urban environments

  • Clean driving record

  • Ability to lift 50 pounds, maneuver wheeled bins of compost weighing up to 250 lbs., and be outside in all weather conditions (we operate year-round)

  • Be on time and show up when expected

  • Good problem solver with personal initiative
